Badge "Alpinist Of The USSR".

Hi all
I thought I would start a sports badge thread. I don't usually go for badges but I likes this one as I was a bit of a climber once myself. It is a small but beautifully made item.

What I am wondering about is the serial number. I can't believe there were 19661 mountain climbers in the USSR, let alone that many 1st class ones! Is it possible that this means 1966, number 1 or is that wishful thinking. I think it is (wishful thinking) but some of you may know better.

Anyone have any ideas as to the size of the number, or know anything about sports badge numbering convensions.

bye for now

McL

McLenin,

The population of the USSR was almost 270 mil, and Alpinism :) was a very popular sport, so I would say that your badge has a fairly small number.

Thanks!

Hi Sergey

I have not seen another one but as I said I am not too big on badges, but this one is so nice, and so well made. You can't see from the photo but the ice-axe is a separate piece and is perfectly curved to fit the rest of the badge which is convex. It is only 2 cm in diameter and I think it is a little work of art :)

bye

Jussi-Pekka,

Can you post a better scan of the screwplate?

Alexei,

Here is the screwplate. I hope the picture is enough good.

I have not seen this kind of screwplate before so I am interest to know more about it. Letters looks like Russian but also maybe Armenian or Georgian ?

Bronze, diameter 12 mm. I don't know does it belongs for this badge.
