Soviet Army Flag

I purchased this flag from a dealer who thought it was a naval jack. I was delighted when it arrived and found it was an army flag. I don't see too many of these on the market like the naval flags, I assume it would be more valuable than the typical soviet navy flags. It is in mint condition and I keep it rolled up in plastic. Could any one give me more information about it's use in the field or was it a headquarters flag?

Re: Soviet Army Flag

No such flag. Never ever existed. Soviet ground force do NOT have common army flag, only unit flags. So this one looks to be fake to me. (Artists used such design in postcards sometimes, but no such flag in the army.)

Re: Soviet Army Flag

Ph3s,

I am not saying the flag is a fake per se as I have seen it described as "unofficial", but others have said, as aaabbb stated, that there really was no official flag like this for the Soviet Army.

Re: Soviet Army Flag

I tend to agree with you Doug. From the little research there is on it, at best it is unofficial but not a fake. The detail sewing techniques and fabric (wool bunting) is exactly the same as the naval flags. Even how the star is printed is the same method. This is not like those one sided cheap cotton Soviet flags. I bought it with a group of naval flags and it was not offered as a Army flag. I know the other flags were the real deal. If it is indeed a "fake" someone went to extraordinary lengths and expense to just make a few bucks. Thanks for all the comments.

Soviet navy flags are hand drawn, not printed, if my memory is correct. Did you get them on the bay? How many bucks?

Re: Soviet Army Flag

I beg to differ with you about the naval flags being hand-drawn. I have about 20 different types of Soviet Fleet naval flags, from the ensigns, jacks, pennants, etc. They are all printed onto sewn woolen panels into different sizes. Maybe you are referring to special unit flags?

Re: Soviet Army Flag

I bought most of my collection from a Russian dealer in LA. before ebay. Most of the flags were 10-15 dollars each except maybe the Order of the Red Banner Guards flag was more.

Are they all woolen bunting? At least I found my naval flag of defence minister was hand drawn (in silk), I'm pretty sure.

Most of them are wool bunting but there are a couple that are silk. I am not totally clear when you say "hand drawn", do you mean hand painted? My silk flags are printed using a screen printed process like the woolen flags. There is no paint on the flag. Maybe the older (WW2 and 1950's) flags were painted? Most of my flags were from the 80's to early 90s.
Cheers!
