Ewald Munschke
Portions of this sadly broken group have been posted elsewhere, but here, in a coherent fashion, are those bits of the group that live with me. When it was sold, the group was broken up by the auctioneer into multiple individual lots, as is so often the case with groups. In general, I do not support capital punishment, but for a crime such as this, I might make an excaption.
A Wikipedia biography (with usual caveats): Quote:
Pieces of his group: -- Hans-Beimler-Medaille (on quirky pentagonal suspender) -- USSR: Badge for International Brigade Participants, 1967 -- USSR: Badge for International Brigade Participants, 1967 (yes, two of them) |

The documents (not the best scans) for his Hans-Beimler-Medaille.

Re: Ewald Munschke
A very interesting commemorative certificate in a large (too large for the scanner) DDR hard-backed folder.
The outside and the first pages. |

And the interior certificate, which had to be scanned in two pieces.

Re: Ewald Munschke
Plus, and finally, there was also an orphaned document for a Soviet veterans' badge.

PS- Here he is.
It is also worth glancing at John McLellan, "'I Wanted to be a Little Lenin': Ideology and the German International Brigade Volunteers", Journal of Contemporary History 41, 2 (April 2006): 287-304. http://www.scribd.com/doc/46037315/I...a-Little-Lenin Last edited by medals73; 02-12-2012 at 12:03 PM. |

Medals73 - I agree with you that it was sad to see this grouping go into the four winds. I for one am a grouping collector. Thanks for the thread.

Re: Ewald Munschke
Believe it or not I have know of folks buying large groups and then throwing away the documents because they just wanted the "shiny shinies". I must admit that on more than one occasion I have dived into dumpsters and put my hands in fires to stop items from being destroyed. Some folks just don't get it.
The previous owner of this farm had a few Rembrandts of which he used the frames as firewood and the canvases to plug a leak in the pigs' trough. What can you do? Are the International Brigades Badges numbered?

Re: Ewald Munschke
The Soviet ones? No, I don't think so, but I'll fetch them home next week and check. I'm pretty certain I'd have noted this fact in my personal catalogue if that had been the case.
The sale of his group included, among other things, his SCW International Brigades commissar uniform. |
