Completion Of Conscription Booklet.
This is what I got today from Moscow.
My translation of the cover: "ОБ ОСВОБОЖДЕНИИ ОТ ВОИНСКОЙ" come out as '"clearing" of conscription' which I take to mean completion or termination. The seller states the owner: "has received a contusion and wound of the right hand and it is dismissed from army in connection with wound." so this is where I get "termination". I'm also told: "Prokhorov, Nikolay Mihajlovich was the marksman in frontier troops of People's Commissariat of Internal Affairs(NKVD) with 1936 for 1940".

Re: Completion of Conscription booklet
I think the last scan shows he won a VoG, a 20th GPW and a 50th Red Army medal. Can anyone confirm please as my written cyrillic skills, while improving slowly, are still pretty rudimentary? :D
Sadly I tore the spine of the front cover almost completely off only minutes after opening the envelope from Russia. I guess subconciously I was trying to keep up with those here that are continually dropping their OGs, OPWs and RSs. ;) Anyway, does anyone have any experience with paper conservation? Is there an archival tape that I can use to keep the cover from totally seperating? I found a 'Scotch' brand tape; called "book tape" that might fit the bill. Comments?

Re: Completion of Conscription booklet
Hi Eric,
Nice pick up. The guys at the local museum I previously talked to about paper conservation said that there wasn't much on the general market that they would use for such repairs. The only thing that they thought would be OK was a photo-safe glue stick (acid-free etc). A few dobs along the spine would hold the cover in place. However, if in doubt I think the best thing is to do nothing. I try to handle my documents as little as possible - as soon as I get one I scan it and then place the original in a Myelar sleeve. I try not to touch it again unless I have to. Your reading of the medals awarded is correct. Simon |

Thanks again Simon. You are the man!
That's the problem, I like to fondle them a little every once in a while. :o

Re: Completion of Conscription booklet
Eric don't worry - we all like to do a bit of fondling now and again!
Just use the proper protection........ cotton gloves. The oils and acids in human sweat will affect paper items if you handle them too much. I have a pair of cheap light-weight cotton gloves that I use for such purposes. Simon |

Re: Completion of Conscription booklet
This may also be refered to as a 'demobilization' certificate.
