Casualty statistic
I'm looking for a reliable statistic for Soviet military casualties (killed, wounded, missing, died of accidents and disease, etc) in Cold War proxy conflicts (excluding Afghanistan). So far I have two numbers, 800 and 2,035. The first is from soldat.ru, and the second is by way of a newspaper article referencing the "National Book of Memory." I'm more inclined to believe this second figure. But in any case, I need a citation-worthy reference (I'm not sure where to find the above book, and my newspaper isn't good enough). Any advice would be much appreciated.
Thanks! Last edited by RedMaestro2; 03-16-2012 at 10:23 PM. |

Re: Casualty statistic
Alex,
I don't know of any official figures for these conflicts, but both figures that you cite seem low IMO. Marc |

Re: Casualty statistic
There is an official MOD book that was either published post-fall of the Soviet Union or released then, and even translated in English. A websearch may reveal it, but the entire book was related to this topic. Sorry I can't be of more help.

Re: Casualty statistic
Thanks, Marc and Paul. I've found two books, one in English titled "Soviet Casualties and Losses," edited by Colonel-General G. F. Krivosheev, and another in Russian titled "Россия (СССР) в локальных войнах и военных конфликтах второй половины XX века," which is the MOD study. I'll have these in my hands to leaf through in a few days. I'll report the figures they give.
