This award was created on 13th October, 1965 by the Chairman of the Council of State Walter Ulbricht, and was supposed to be awarded to NVA soldiers as a valour decoration in time of war, some sources state for the invasion of Czechosolvakia.
Named after the Prussian Field Marshal Gebhard Leberecht von Blücher who fought against Napoléon Bonaparte in 1814.
The decoration was never awarded as the GDR was never in a state of war; however, a couple of hundred of these decorations were minted at the VEB Präwema in Markneukirchen and were ready to be awarded if ever needed.
The prototypes, Orders and Medals were kept locked away in secret and only came to light after German unification.
The decoration came in six classes: the Order grade, which was divided into three classes (bronze, silver and gold), and the Medal grade, which was also divided in three classes. With this in mind you could say that the Medal is the 4th,5th and 6th class Blücher Order in Medal form.
