Committees Of The Defence Of The Revolution, CDR.
The Committees for the Defense of the Revolution (CDR) was founded on September 28, 1960, in Havana, playing the role of collective surveillance against foreign interference and acts of destabilization of the Cuban political system.
The opening of the CDR took place in a public ceremony in front of the Presidential Palace (now the Museum of the Revolution), headed by Fidel Castro Ruz. It's the most powerful Cuban non-governmental organizations, which is the mobilization of supporters of the Revolution as one of its main objectives. Tasks also involved in health, hygiene, support to the economy and to promote citizen participation in several areas, including participation in elections or at meetings. Before the founding of the CDR, there were several organizations with different purposes, which were unified with the creation of the new mass organization. Structure is centralized, each block has its own CDR, and CDR presidents from each block comprise the CDR of the neighborhood, province and national. On the national bodies and address are: the Congress, the Management and Executive Secretariat. It has about 7.6 million members, senior citizens 14 years of age (a prerequisite for membership in the organization). The Committees for the Defense of the Revolution became, as well as an organized force for the defense of socialism in an inexhaustible source of work for the Cuban people. Activities: Activities include building maintenance, street cleaning, waste separation for recycling, activation of energy-saving mechanisms, the night patrol surveillance, etc. Other tasks include collection of blood for hospitals, struggle and vigilance against any possible infiltration of packages of drugs by sea around the island of Cuba, the incorporation of young people to study and work, and care for disadvantaged families social or elderly homeless. They also had as objectives, among others, participation in the National Literacy Campaign and the implementation of vaccination against polio and other diseases.
