Order "Partisan Star".
What is the award that this Yugoslavian soldier has on his breast?
Is it a Red Star or some Yougoslawian award? |

Order of Partisan Star 1, 2 and 3 Class
The award was instituted on August, 15, 1943 in three classes.
The award was given to commanders of Partisan units and guerrillas for skilful actions and bravery. (Pic CO YY) Eddie.

Partisan Stars ?
Photo shows a group of yugoslavian partisans , I suppose they would

Here're the pics! a complete serie of diplomas for partisan star with riffles (aka 3rd class).
we can see 2-3 things...the 1st and 2nd diplomas have been awarded on the same day! strange coincidence! With the 3rd one, I saw 2 variations in the printing factory serial number, one for 1944 the other for 1945. What worried me and pushed me to contact Dave was the filigree hardly visible on the scans:with daylight we can read "Banpost Römerturm"...what kind of paper did they used? When I bought the star I thought to a fake with old West German paper...but it seems not.

This is one of my favorite Communist Bloc order
This 3rd class is from the early issue made in the Soviet Union by the MONETNY DVOR. This order is much nicer than the late issues which were made from the Zagreb Mint. The issue of this award ceased in 1973. P.S.: Sorry for the bad scans. it's not easy to scan a screwback ! Soviet

Partisan Star.
Hello!
I just got this one today, the postman gave it to me 30 minutes ago... :D It's the second version, made by Yugoslavian IKOM. I have the soviet version too though, but not in case of issue. |

This makes me want to collect Yugoslavian stuff too! Tell me, is there a noticable difference between the Soviet made and the locally made orders? Is the Soviet one mint marked so you can tell the difference?

hello gentlemen, in your opinion, what makes the 3rd class so common to find? high reserves of non awarded pieces?

Well I have some thoughts on this matter. There does seem to be quite a few of the 3rd class IKOM Mint pieces around but there is no great profusion of the Monetny Dvor version it is not only nicer it is also harder to find. Something that I speculate holds true for nost of the Yugoslavian awards is that given the relatively low collector interest (at least for the present) even the pretty modest numbers of these items seem plentiful for now. I would further speculate that any increase in collector interest in these items would deplete the stocks of the rare stuff almost instantly and make even the most common items disapear rather quickly too. As a for instance a common Yugoslavian Order of Bravery I have seen numbers up in the 145,000 range which I assume were also from the unissued range of numbers. and the published issue numbers for their most common medals are in the 200,000 to 500,000 range. And these are the "common" medals. Some Yugoslavian medals that are to some considered common were issued under 100,000 examples. Think of the "common" Soviet medals 8,000,000 to 12,000,000 and even things like the Soviet Labor Veteran medal 40,000,000! Now consider how rare we all consider a Soviet medal made in under 100,000 examples. I have seen IKOM Mint Partisan Stars numbered up to the high 28000 range. If we assume that even if these higher numbers were from unisued stock it still makes them 100 to 150 times scarcer than a Soviet Red Star (aprox 4,000,000 issued), 50 times scarcer than a Soviet Order of the Patriotic War 2nd class type 2 (aprox. 1.2 million issued). It is difficult I know to make such comparisons but it may perhaps stand to put this in some perspective. In my mind it is not that there is a glut of Yugoslavian pieces but rather only a very few collectors are presently into them. Our hobby is after all one of supply and demand. if 10 people are looking for an item of which there were 28000 made (hard to say how many still exist) it does make them look pretty common place, if on the other hand thousands of people began looking for these as is the case with Soviet Awards suddenly these Yugoslavian items would start being quite hard to come by. How does this figure in with the opinion of others? Ron |
