Soviet award research possibilities
I thought I would start this topic to provide an overview of which Soviet awards can be researched, what kind of documents can be obtained, and which are the most useful Internet resources for additional research. Over the years I have come into contact with several researchers who work in the Russian archives and who can obtain the information mentioned below.
These researchers do not have websites, they usually do not speak English, and the websites listed below are in Russian, but I'm sure that several senior members here, myself included, would be happy to assist in obtaining research information. This topic isn't meant as a commercial ad, but merely as a reference of what is available. Additions are always welcome. MILITARY AWARDS (ARMY, AIR FORCE, NAVY) Pre-June 1941 awards
Post-June 1941 awards
"SECRET" AWARDS (NKVD, KGB, SMERSH, PARTISANS)
CIVILIAN AWARDS Pre-June 1941 awards
Post-June 1941 awards
USEFUL WEBSITES

Auke,
Thank you for the wonderful overview. You might also consider including the Special Award Record Cards that are available for HSUs and Full Cavaliers. They are distinct from the standard Record Cards. Quote:

Re: Soviet award research possibilities
I have found with the exceptional array of peoples awarded and for such diverse reasons that sometimes it is possible to obtain the awards of someone "famous" enough to be found with a simple google search (in one or more languages) and sometimes the recipients will even have their own multilingual wikipedia pages. Success rates are generally very low but far from negligible. Often obituaries or other biographical information will present itself but results very considerably. Sometimes searching gets you only to a dead end, but without trying you never know. On the other end of the scale I have found videos of recipients, works written by them and even a photograph of the recipient with award in hand. It is also possible to find and communicate with the recipient or their family with luck on your side.
Podvignaroda is constantly updating but there is certainly a lot more to come. The sheer number of variables out there means results can be very random in nature. There were millions of individual recipients, each with their own story. Some will be known by the masses whilst others are totally lost to time. This is a good place to extract and display what we can find out about certain individuals.

Re: Soviet award research possibilities
Who is offering $15 per serial research? It is considerably cheaper than the quote I am currently getting and more in line with research costs of other nations' awards.

Re: Soviet award research possibilities
I found one for myself for that price. Don't forget that prices are in roubles and rouble now worth less. For the price, I get by the number of the award the Award Record card or protocol of awarding if there is no record card, citation could be found on PodvigNaroda.

Re: Soviet award research possibilities
I made the same point to my researcher about the rouble - yet their prices went up. My research was put on hold. I can now buy two Medals (Combat/Bravery) with booklets for the same price of researching one by serial so guess what I've been doing?
$15 a go? I'd research absolutely everything.
