1943 Shoulderboards with M - which branch?

The attached photograph shows an NCO of an engineer unit and may be the only way to determine where he served in the Red Army.
The only "unusual" thing here is the "M" Monogramme on the shoulderboards. Any thoughts as to what unit worn such insignia?

I was certain that letters were used only in Cossack and Interior troops at that time. This seems to be neither...

That would be "U", I think.
Later in his career he was probably told that he looks better without facial hair, as he was already clean-shaved in the 1950's.

But cadets should have the gold/silver galon around the board, this one has none...

I have found an answer and thought I'll share.
The "M" signifies Moscow Red Banner Military Engineering school, however the letter was also used by the EM and NCOs assigned to the school, not only cadets, and it seems to be the case here.
