Placement Of Awards On Early WW2 Uniforms
Hallo,
I am putting together an officer uniform and I was wondering how and where to place orders/badges/medals. I plan on having an Order Of Lenin, Order Of the Red Banner, Order Of The Red Star, Order of Great Patriotic War, 20 year anniversay on the RKKA, Merit medal, Defense Of Leningrad, Hero Of the Soviet Union, a best scout badge (Were officers allowed this or was it for the lower ranks), Guards badge, Order Of Glory, Order of Suvorov/Kutuzov/Nevsky, along with that massive list 2 wound stripes. Also, does anyone how far up the chevrons go on the arms, I know they are fairly low, but I would like it as accurate as possible. Finally I have a wool greatcoat, and I was wondering if it had some sort of best and if it also had chevrons on the sleeves. Any or all help would be greatly appreciated. I looked through a few books today and they were a bit of help, but all the awards were in different positions. |

Re: Placement Of Awards On Early WW2 Uniforms
Hello and welcome to the forum.
First, you throw a lot of info up...might be best to first post a photo of the tunic you are working with ( M1935, M1940?...I am assuming an M1943 but might be wrong)...then, do an actual list of the awards you want to put on it...right now I can say you have more than you need. I think once we can filter this a bit better we should be able to help; lots of very good members here willing to help with their time and knowledge. DougD Moderator |

In any case, wouldn't this be a creation of pure (impure?) fantasy?
Someone wore the uniform, what legitimate decoration spoor is there? |

Re: Placement Of Awards On Early WW2 Uniforms
Of course I should have been more specific, I am a newbie after all. I was wondering what the over all placement of the awards were, but I will list what I am going for.
I am putting together an M35 officer uniform together. I was wanting to put an oder of lenin, red banner, and red star and the great patriotic war. Also a guards badge, an rkka 20 year medal. As for others I have yet to decide. I was wondering if officers would wear the best badges (rifleman, scout, etc, or where those just for enlisted soldiers?) When it comes down to it, since my particular uniform is replaced in 43 would it be best to get non ribboned lenin, and red banner? I know it is almost blasphemy to use this word, but I plan on getting reproductions for the things I am not able to afford just yet. I hope that does not stop anyone from helping me out. As for stripes, did they have them on their greatcoats, I could not find any pictures with officers wearing them. Also, as for the uniform itself, and the greatcoat, how far up the arm are they sewn? They seem to be pretty low when compared to US and other chevron placement. Any help would be greatly appreciated. I have been looking around and I was looking at the fakes/reproductions postings and reading and looking at all the pictures. I spent about 3 hours doing just that. Cheers.... |

Re: Placement Of Awards On Early WW2 Uniforms
If its a pre-1943 uniform, don't go crazy...get repro screwbacks for the Lenin, Red Banner, and the 20th Anniv. medal...thats it. No Guards badge, no wound stripe, etc. Just that...the M1935 and M1940 should be more or less simply decorated..if you want to really make a uniform display covered in medals then get a senior officer, like a Lt.Colonel, get the M1943 parade tunic, and decorate it like it would have been in 1945. Totally different look.
No problem being new! If you can post pics, I think we can help out more. DougD |

IronHrt,
Doug hit the nail on the head here. Have a look at various threads on this forum; plenty of pictures were posted showing awards in wear on different uniforms. Marc |

Re: Placement Of Awards On Early WW2 Uniforms
Agree with Doug. I have several M40 general's tunics and they usually only have two or, at the most, 3 holes. An especially heroic officer with service in finland or early war might have a lenin/hero combo, a bravery medal and maybe a red star or red banner but that would be it. All these would be worn on the left chest and lenin and red banner would be screwback. Best is to look at lots of period pictures to see how folks wore them.
Don't worry about fakes...To properly bemedal your tunic with genuine pieces would take away your ability to buy more uniforms. Think of how much cloth you could buy for the cost of a single screwback lenin (which may end up being fake anyways...just a real expensive one)! |

Excellent, thank you all for the advice. I appreciate it very much. I will definitely keep it simple and eventually more on to a 43. Cheers.

One thing that may help you decide with the other awards: the Order of Glory was only awarded to enlisted men and NCOs in the Red Army.
