Kashіtsyn, Aleksej Mihailovich, Platoon Commander, 44th Guards Rifle Regiment
Hi guys,
Here's a set I picked up recently. You may have seen it--as it made the rounds, through Eastern and South Europe. It is finally home now. :thumbsup Kind of sad when the family sells everything associated with their veteran--the set not only included his medal docs and order books, but also a Disabled War Veteran ID (Group II), CPSU ID, Marriage certificate, Medical notes, etc.. I am waiting on the research--more info is coming! Thanks for looking, George |

..putting my USB Microscope to work...
Side note, the set was sent EMS but still took 40 days to get to New York from Bulgaria. The delay was, understandably, a major source of stress towards the end. George |

Re: Nevsky + Red Banner / Aviator set
George, two things:
First, it may be "sad" that the family of a vet sells his/her awards, but in this case at least they stayed together and weren't sold in pieces and lost to the Four Winds. Besides, you already seem to have more respect for them than the people who originally sold them. Second, items mailed from Bulgaria are notoriously slow getting to the US. I don't know if it has something to do with customs regulations being similar to RF ones (haven't heard anything like that though), or some other reason, but even the smallest packages with just one little aluminum badge can take 6 to 8 weeks or more to get here. I never understood it since other countries in the same region don't seem to have this problem. Phillip

Re: Nevsky + Red Banner / Aviator set
Thanks again guys. Phillip, I agree with you on both counts. It's too bad that the family lets go of the awards, but the person will live on through our collections. I've noticed that about Bulgaria, as well. Like you said, I've had a dime-sized znachok take over a month to get here.

Re: Nevsky + Red Banner / Aviator set
Great looking set.
You are now the care keeper for this small set of larger part of Soviet history. Please share the results of your research when it is completed. Dat |

Re: Nevsky + Red Banner / Aviator set
Thanks again guys. Eric, will do--especially once the research arrives here. I love seeing the docs myself. This gent was a Communist Party member for 45+ years. His CPSU ID shows that he paid his party dues dutifully until April of 1990. I wonder what happened then--did his faith in the party (which was outlawed in his native Moldova a year later) finally wane? Or did he pass away (at a somewhat early, but not unusual for USSR) age of 66?
Re: Bulgaria, yeah the delay is almost certainly here in US Customs. I imagine there's a list of countries for which all packages get x-rayed / scrutinized here, and Bulgaria is on that list. Esteban, I do think the restrictions you describe have since been lifted though. (according to the research I had done while waiting) Regardless, there's definitely a strong delay there and USPS doesn't have much info when it does occur. Re: Nevsky + Red Banner / Aviator set
Sure, Alexei--a couple more photos.. The set is in my hands now. I need to take more pics of the docs as well. It's a bit curious that the Nevsky and Gvardia badge are in almost impeccable shape while the medal ribbons are so dirty and tattered. The CSM is unnumbered. Well, research will help clear up any doubts.
There is one screwback missing btw--a GPW-2 # 392,194. I suspect the GPW-2 may have gone missing in the veteran's lifetime--his 1985 jubilee GPW-1 has almost no gold plating left, as if someone intentionally made it look like a GPW-2. Who knows.. Thanks for the kind words and comments guys. :thumbsup George |

Re: Nevsky + Red Banner / Aviator set
Congrats on the set! These days it seems almost impossible to find complete award groupings.
