For Bravery,1321699,88mm Mortarist,1280th Rifle Regiment

Hello!

I got a next Bravery medal as a present. It was found in Upper Silesia and its number is 1321699. Can someone find out, when was the medal approximately awarded?

Thanks!

Re: Question about a Bravery Medal

Are you going to research it further ? Although it costs money and can take months , you can get a copy of his award card and the citation for the act of bravery.

Re: Question about a Bravery Medal

andrew6767: There is the citation too. He was awarded because ...during last battle (20/7/44) of village Mezamatvin he killed five german soldiers in time of three german counterattacks.

He was in a crew of a machine gun.

One my fellow in Russia is trying to find some relatives because he is not written into a register of fallen soldiers.

What division and/or regiment awarded this medal? Thanks in advance.

I'll venture it's a subordinate unit of the 2 Baltic Front. I have on file a 1.320M awarded by 2 Belorussian Front, but it's near the end of a serial-number run. I also have a 1.324M which belongs to 2 Baltic Front.

Re: Question about a Bravery Medal

desantnik: It was the 1280nd rifle regiment under the 391st rifle division. What interesting is - the medal was found in the area (Upper Silesia near polish-czech border) which was liberated by this division during March 1945. So it's very nice verification that the division (under 1st Ukrainian Front) fought there.
