Maybe it was digged out somewhere else and then sold in Volgograd, or he just mixed things up a little bit - my friend made a round trip to some historical WWII locations such as St. Petersburg, Moskva, Kiev and Volgograd. I will ask him.

The serial number is complete and I will see, if I can research it. I hope the medal was just ripped off during a battle and the soldier went to a hospital or at least war cemetery. My grandfather also died on a battlefield near Leningrad and found his final resting place there and I do not want anyone to dig in his grave to remove his medals either...
