Interesting Flag Photograph

I've never seen anything like this and I was pleased to acquire it.

It's a hard cover document that contains a photograph of a Soviet Soldier in front of his military unit flag.

My Russian language skills are not the best, but it appears to me to be an award in and of itself, an "Honor Photograph" that was an award from the political department of the unit. Perhaps a soldier who showed particular gifts with the philosophies of Marx and Lenin was honored by having his photograph taken in front of the unit flag and presented with the photo as an award?

Whether this was done by any group beyond this specific unit is a mystery to me.
