China's first astronaut is Space Hero

Beijing, Nov 7 (IANS) The title of "Space Hero" was conferred on China's first astronaut Yang Liwei at a rally here Friday attended by the top leadership to mark the country's first manned space flight, Xinhua reports.

Central Military Commission chairman Jiang Zemin, who conferred the title on Liwei, also awarded him a badge of honour.

President Hu Jintao, Premier Wen Jiabao, government leaders, defence officials and space experts attended the rally, organised by the Central Committee of the Communist Party of China (CPC), the State Council and the Central Military Commission.

Wen announced the awards at the rally.

Addressing the gathering, Hu said China would work with the international community for the peaceful use of outer space.

Liwei was launched into space October 15 aboard the Shenzhou-5 spacecraft, orbiting the earth 14 times before safely landing the next day.

The launch made China the third country in space after Russia and the U.S.
