Not to appear more ignorant than necessary on this issue, but let me make sure I have this straight - the diplomatic corps were the only people outside of the navy who wore black or sometimes white uniforms - correct? I ask because of all Soviet uniforms I have seen, the black ones and the occasional grey ones are definitely my favorites.

Mostly between 1947 and 1954 personal ranks and black uniforms were instituted for:

Railway personnel also had black(ish) uniforms.
