Soviet measuring equipment
Can anyone tell me what kind of measuring equipment this exactly is? Although it is produced in 1942, I have the idea that it is not a military measuring tool. Of course it can be used as a measuring tool for the production of military equipment.

It's a Gunner's Quadrant...
And even more commonly than mortars, it is used by howitzer and gun crews. In the US Army, it's called a "Gunner's Quadrant", and is usually carried in the kit of the the firing platoon's/battery's (depending on TOE) Gunnery Sergeant ("Gunny" for short - as opposed to the other senior NCO - Platoon Sergeant/Chief of Firing Battery or "Smoke").
The quandrant is not used with every round fired; instead, it gets its greatest use doing field calibrations of the onboard instruments or during a very precise registration. Many arty pieces will actually have indentations on the top of the breech to accomodate the footprint of the device to give consistent readings. There's really no reason why you couldn't use it on the breech of a tank gun either, and with the right firing tables (FT's), you could firing such a low-trajectory weapon in the indirect fire mode in a pinch if you've got the right type of rounds in the ready-rack. How did I learn all this? In the shadow of the Washi_t-a Mountains (the software misidentifies those harmless center four letters if I don't space them out), with Lookout Signal Mountain to my front, reinforced sitting across from the the CA's mighty 28th CAA vicinity Bad Hersfeld and Jena, and then later rolling through the Tawakalna Division where I learned that deserts ARE really cold at night. Now it all goes into the brain's storage bin with all the rest of my pointless trivia! Left 50, Add 50, Fire For Effect, Over! Two Rounds, At My Command! Platoon, Stand by! Platoon, Fire! :D Last edited by Kirchgoens; 04-03-2008 at 01:28 PM. |

Same name...
On closer examination of the center photo, you'll see the Russian phrase of something like "орудийный квадрант" (case changed), which would translate to "gun quadrant" or "artillery quadrant". So... The Russian name is the same as the American English name for the instrument.
