Not as hard as may appear
Hi all,
(My first post, Yeahhh!) I am heading to Moscow and Volgograd in one week and managed to get my visa sorted very fast. Im in the navy so needed to get it sorted pronto so i booked my trip through a russian travel specialist. They sent me the official invite and tourist ticket by post which i recieved one day later. Then i headed to the Russian consulate in Dublin and had it processed in 40mins! Not as bad as some of the horror stories i have heard regarding this matter. My advise is to book with a reputable travel agent and specify that you need it all processed real fast. Anyway, if anyone has been to Volgograd would love some tips on the sites as i cant find a guide book anywhere! Rgds Tristan

Basically the wway it works is the more you pay the faster you get the visa. Im from Ireland so headed to the Russian Consulate in Dublin http://www.ireland.mid.ru/visa_en.html and as you can see from the site the prices vary alot. But 100E is a small price to pay for peice for mind that its sorted in 40 mins.
Have a good trip anyway, will post how mine goes and let you know what not to miss. Rgds Tristan

Travelling In The Former Soviet Union.
Good day all,
I m heading to Volgograd and Moscow in one weeks time and was wondering if anyone who has been there can reccommend any good places for purchasing soviet militaria and sites of intrest. In particular things to see and do in Volgograd as there is a lack of guide books on the subject, whereas moscow there is an abundance. Anyone know any good stores in Moscow for soviet militaria??? Rgds Tristan

Tristan,
There is very little in Volgograd in terms of shops and the like. If you are there on a Saturday moring, try the local club meeting at Dom Officerov (Ploshad Lenina), but don't expect anything overly amazing. For the rest, enjoy Mamaev Kurgan and the Volga river. Marc |

Russian Influence In Alaska
My wife and I are talking about taking a vacation in Alaska, and I thought that I would bring up the topic of Russian influence in Alaska. I understand that the US purchased Alaska from Russia in the 1860s. Being former Russian territory, are there any places that would be worth making a visit to that shows Russian influence, such as onion domed churches, etc?
Hopefully, this will not seem to be a really weird question, and if so, I apologize, and will go take my medication! Thanks! |

Hi Roy,
First off, let me just say that I think Alaska is truly one of the most amazing places to visit. From its breath-taking beauty to all the great outdoor oppurtunities, it's hard to go wrong with a visit up there! (Can you tell I like it ) To your question: I haven't seen a lot plainly visible Russian influence, ie architecture. I do recall seeing an Orthodox church w/onion domes in Anchorage and I believe one in Sitka. A quick search on the net provided this list of churches, if you're interested in that specifically. I think you see Russian influence predominatly in the local offerings of crafts & souvenirs. From traditional icons to nesting dolls and lacquer boxes, a large number of these items are available in many town shops. The craftsmanship on some of these pieces is truly amazing! Well, I hope this will provide a bit of a start. Perhaps someone with more travel experiance in Alaska can provide more info. Hope you enjoy your trip wherever you end up visiting! - Sean

Roy,
I made it up to Alaska only once, so I do not feel qualified at all to answer your question. I just want to open the scope of this topic by mentioning that the Russians settled as far south as the area now appropriately known as Russian River, about 60 miles north of San Francisco. So, when we say that the Russians sold Alaska to the US, we must keep in mind the meaning at the time, not simply stick to our present day geographic definitions (same for the Louisiana purchase from the French). About 10 to 15 miles north of the Russian river estuary is a place named Fort Ross, the southernmost Russian settlement in America. It is a small settlement nested on top of a cliff along the ocean front. If you want to see what XVIII~early XIX century Russian architecture was, this is the place to go (I realize that this is some distance away from your intended vacationing spot ). It is a typical all-wooden Russian village - orthodox church with onion dome, well, stables, living quarters, etc - surrounded with a high fence, now a State Historical Park. Really striking and interesting place. Marc |

Thank you very much for your replies! We're hoping to stay at least one week to take in the sites. At the earliest, I'm hoping that at the latest, we'll go next summer, or at the earliest, this fall.
Thanks again! |
