Captured Prisoner Of War Photographs.

See attached - an unusual find I think. These are POW photos taken somewhere inside the Soviet Union. What do you guys think? Are they Italians, Romanians, both, or something else?

POW's...

And some more, this time including a scene from some unknown town. I'd love to know where this is, but even a 1200dpi scan won't give me the words on the facade of that theater-looking building.

POW's - a couple photos of Germans...

These two shots are of Germans. One of the dudes is reading "Freies Deutschland", the weekly newspaper of the "National Committee of Free Germany" ("NKFD"). I believe that's Von Paulus in the second shot.

Re: POW's - Italian, Romanian, other, or both?

Wow! Great photos Brian.

My unedjucated guess would be Romanians. Those in the first set look to be in pretty good shape, and the compound is definitely not what we in the west have heard Soviet POW camps looked like.

The photo with the German's reading the paper looks almost staged; the men have a funny look about them. Then again if I was staring down a dozen PPSh-41 barrels I'd look funny too.

As far as the German Genral goes I don't know. But I could post the image elsewhere and perhaps get an ID if that would help?

In any event a great find!

Re: POW's - Italian, Romanian, other, or both?

I'd guess that to be captured by either side was an almost guaranteed slow and painful ticket to a dirt nap, but there's always the happy photos to go along with it all!

Do we have any smart guys out there in the forum on Romanian, Hungarian, or Italian uniforms? Who are these dudes in the photos other than the obvious two shots of Germans? Given the number of groups who actual fought on that front (Germans, Hungarians, Italians, Romanians, Finns, Spaniards, etc), I am not quite sure what I'm looking at. I also don't have uniform references for the smaller groups. What do you guys think?

Re: POW's - Italian, Romanian, other, or both?

Hi Brian,

Have a look at the following picture on Romanian Forces in WW2 site:

WorldWar2.ro

Quite a few of these tall caps in the early photos.

That does look like it. I didn't find this site before when I was googling. Thank you for the link... I've just written the website POC's to see if they'll take a look and tell me what they think.

...Brian
