Distinction "28th Of September".
OK, folks, your guess is as good as mine. Appears to be a cane harvester with the letters "CDR" or perhaps "GDR" and nothing at all on back.
Whatever this was for it's waaaaaaay down the precedence list, 11th from last, just behind a sports medal but ahead of Medals named for 19 April and 23 August. ? For teenage "volunteers" at harvest time? ? For some sort of rural militia enrollment? |

Rick,
Its a CDR = Committee for the Defence of the Revolution medal . Founded on September 28, 1960, with 122,000 chapters and eight million members, they constitute the largest mass organisation in Cuba. They arose out of the need to unite the people in defence of the Revolution from hostile actions by the U.S. Today they serve important tasks like organizing blood donations, immunization campaigns, spearheading neighborhood cleanup and beautification, collection of recyclable materials and environmental protection. All of this is done with the aim of protecting citizenry, property and community improvement. Cuba presents medals to Vietnam Fatherland Front leaders The Standing Board of the Cuban Committee for Defence of the Revolution (CDR) has conferred "September 28" medals on leaders of the Vietnam Fatherland Front (VFF) on the occasion of its founding anniversary (September 28) in recognition of their contributions to developing friendship and solidarity between the two nations, especially the two mass organisations. The medals were presented to Huynh Dam, VFF General Secretary; Le Truyen, VFF Vice President; and Ha Thi Lien, member of the VFF Standing Committee, at a ceremony held in Havana on October 6. CDR President Juan Jose Fonseca warmly welcomed a delegation of the Vietnam Fatherland Front which visited Cuba at a time when his organisation was celebrating the 45th founding anniversary of CDR as a manifestation of the close solidarity between the two nations and mass organisations. He stressed that the awards showed the Cuban people's warm sentiments to the Vietnamese people for their active support and assistance to Cuba in difficult times. VFF Vice President Le Truyen thanked the CDR for the award as well as the Cuban people for their hospitality. Also on this occasion, CDR leaders presented a painting of Jose Marti, a national hero of Cuba, to the VFF delegation. (VNA) Eddie.

GREAT information which clears this one up! We'll find out soon enough what level of service it required, but can't have been much given where it comes in the awards system.
I didn't expect this one was going to turn out to be a hidden treasure. Now if only we could find out which of the dozens of "named" Orders meant what before everything comes out on eBay.... :thumbsup Rick |

Re: Distinción "28 de Septiembre"
Taz, Rick,
Another piece to add to the puzzle. Last Saturday at the monthly Militaria Show here in Budapest I bought a White tunic for a Hungarian Diplomat circa 1980s. The following day I picked up the dress green uniform for the same diplomat. The green uniform had the standard plastic Hungarian ribbon bar pinned to it and I ignored it at the time as that kind of thing would probably not have been worn on the dress uniform. Yesterday, I took it off the uniform and started to write out the awards for reference purposes. The last of the seven awards on the bar appears to be the medal that started this thread. While this bar did not belong on a Diplomatic dress uniform it looks as though it certainly would be correct in the white every day tunic. It looks as though this award may have been made to other foriegn nationals as well as the Vietnamese. Have a look and see what you think. Regards, Gordon |

Re: Distinción "28 de Septiembre"
Hi again Gordon,
This one i'm not too sure of, The yellow middle stripes seem closer together than the ribbon for the Distinción "28 de Septiembre". Could it possibley be the ribbon Medaille der Waffenbrüderschaft (Brotherhood in Arms Medal - Silver) (1966) from the GDR? Regards Eddie Here is the CDR ribbon
