Badge "Excellent In Fishery Industry".
Gentlemen,
I would appreciate any comments on this. I was told it was a fisherman's badge. Looks like it was issued possibly as an award for catching a large amount of fish? Some very nice detail present. Also some very ugly fish at the bottom of the badge. Also present is a book. On the reverse of the badge is a mark of silver 916 and star and letters in Russian "I Z".

Ugly fish?!?! Don't you like caviar?? I see a nice sturgeon there. ;)
It is a badge for Distinguished Worker in the Fishing Industry. These were usually issued for high quota/plan fullfilment - as you say lot's of fish. Nice quality - any dates in the book?? Shawn |

Shawn,
Haha..no, I couldn't tell a goldfish from a silverfish :) ok that might be going to an extreme. I've never had caviar. Grosses me out to much, but if Iwere somewhere it was being offered to me I may be tempted to try it. The document is dated 1939. Thanks, Art

Art,
That is a great badge and document. Caviar? It's ok, but it tastes like fish eggs. |

Sergey,
Thanks, it came as part of a group. The other items are a Soviet Polar Regions medal awarded by the Navy, Patriotic War Labor Vet, and a few jubilee medals. He must've had a lifelong relationship with the Sea. I guess caviar must be an acquired taste. Like Lutefisk. Art

Sounds like a great, interesting set. I like the mix of military and labour. Thanks for the date too. Nice to learn new things.
I can see now that the screw-nut is dated 1939 too. Shawn |

Art,
This badge is published in Avers-5(I) under # 165. They say it's from 1938, and the price is $70-120, so I would say in reality it should cost at least twice as much in Russia, more with a document. Congradulation! Alexei P.S. Nothing beats black Russian caviar.:) |

Thanks Alexei,
Good news...is Avers notoriously underpriced or something? Wondering why the 2x Russian price jump, unless your Avers is a real old copy? Forgive me, this is my first true dabbling with badges, and I know of Avers, but my familiarity with anything out of the realm of orders and medals is nil. Hmm, black russian caviar..served on those little melba toasts is it? you always hear of the well-to-do eating black caviar and drinking champagne. I guess that's an acquired taste much like a good cigar and a glass of good scotch. Something many people find disgusting :) Art
