Mining Institute Graduation Badge.
I've seen described as:
A) Russian USSR badge given for Graduation in the Mine Geological University. Made from solid metal with enamel. or B) To Excellent Worker of Competition of Coal Mine Industry. People's Commissariat of Coal Mine Industry. I think more like the former than the latter. Anyway, I just got this after much handwringing as the seller made no sort of communication whatsoever after accepting my second offer. The first image is the 2 foot length of electric tape wrapped around a paper towel that the seller passed off as packaging. :( Thankfully there was no damage. Nice quality in any event. Two piece as well! #2813 in A8 on page 563. "Горный институт знак выдавался выпускникам ряда вузов"= The college of mines, a sign stood out to graduates of some high schools or The Mountain Institute, a sign of a number of university graduates was issued. So mining/geology college/higher school/insitute graduate badge.

Re: Mining Institute Graduation Badge.
Eric, it is a nice looking badge in what appears to be excellent condition (though I don't thin the screw nut is original, but that hardly matters in my book:).
I also agree with the idea that it is a grad badge rather than a propaganda merit badge. I've been thinking about these "Mining Institutes" and I have the feeling that the people who attended these higher education academies were more of the engineering side of mining rather than teaching large numbers of people how to dig. Just something that I've always wondered about. Phillip

Re: Mining Institute Graduation Badge.
You can learn to dig very VERY quickly when someone starts shooting at you.
A very nice piece. Wonder if anyone has got a picture of it in place on a miner? be they the digging, instructing or planing type.

Maybe this is from the era when they were transitioning from screwback to pinback? Avers has this, and a bunch more under the general heading '50s - 80s' badges and I get a 70s vibe from the materials and finish although the 4 rivets tend to make me think earier than that. Quote:
BTW, about 30mm x 40mm. Brass and enamel, according to A8.

Re: Mining Institute Graduation Badge.
Here's an image of the badge and a doc that I found during a Russian language web search. Notice the '52 date.
I keep seeing the small screwback, but also a differnt way to keep the the two-piece badge together; namely a nut on the screwpost that we see often on graduation rhomboid badges.

Re: Mining Institute Graduation Badge.
Hi Guys
almost the same badge apart from the impressed star on the reverse, I also have no idea if the screwback is correct. Nick. :) |

I've seen that version as well.
