My attempt at a collection and display

Hey Guys,

I've been looking for a decent priced Shadow Box for ages now but have been really unlucky at finding one.

I was out at the local antique shop this weekend and came across this horrendous piece of artwork for £3/$5. It was bordered with this horrendous faux frosting effect film, but for the price, it was rude not to buy it and at least have a go at fixing it up.

2012 - 3.jpg

I craked open my craft knife and set to work scraping of the fake frosting plastic stuff, and about 15 minutes later, a **** load of mess and a pretty pissed girlfriend, i had it cleaned up pretty nice.

2012 - 2.jpg

I then covered the back board in an old bed sheet and set to work fastening the awards to it and this is how it ended up

2012 - 4.jpg

The backing will be changed when i can find some nice fabric and i'm aware the Konnigsberg is bad (i got given it for free so hard to refuse) and the 30 years of Victory ribbon is wrong (this is being adressed!)

But for 3 quid and a way to spend a wet afternoon, i thought it turned out ok :-).

Now to buy some awards!

(I;ve only been collecting since Mid April, so this is just the very beginning of my collection and i can't wait to watch it grow! Please don't rip me too hard

That's the way to do it! Don't get ripped off having frames specially made... Out with the junk in with the good stuff!

I haven't been lucky enough to find one of those recessed frames yet but I'm always on the look out.

It's a amazing what you can do with a minimal outlay, an old frame, a little bit of skill and a few good items.

Re: How to display Soviet awards

Thanks guys :-)

Hopefully one day it'll be the home for a nice documented group!

I also managed to pick up the Berlin medal and a nice belt buckle along with it for £20 so i was pretty happy that day!

Re: How To Store And Display Awards.

OK, Tommy suggested that I take some pics and share my collection here and I will be happy to do so, my better half is off on Sunday, I will ask to have some pics taken then and will post them. In the mean time, I will get some data together on the Orders / Medals / Badges that I have, numbers where applicable and post them with the pics, ANY INPUT would be greatly appreciated, btw.

So far, including the Medal for Bravery that I just got from Bill Garvy and will be delivered tomorrow (A HUGE THANK YOU TO BILL,) I have, I BELIEVE, 8 Orders, 2 Medals (not for sure what the difference is between Medals and Badges (remember I am a newbie please,) 3 badges, that are original and I consider special (Soviet) and I have 45 "other" badges / medals from the former DDR, PROC and Socialist Hungary.

A nice "BEGINNER" collection, I think?

A good start. You are fully "hooked", padawan. Let the addiction flourish.

Re: How To Store And Display Awards.

I look forward to seeing it!

No matter how big or small the collection, every piece is something to be proud of and you can be proud in yourself that you're doing your bit to preserve history
