I must admit I didn't find any information about producing officer's daggers on the ZIK factory in Ekaterimburg, so Eric and Lapa have a very good point. But it seems other people on the net are also confused because I've seen references to ZIK marker's mark on daggers as being "Kalinin Works".

Zlatoust is a very long-established manufacturer of various types of blades (daggers, swords, etc).

OK, it's the old Zlatoust.
take a look here: þÅÒÎÙÅ ÎÏÖÉ «û×ÁÒÃÍÅÓÓÅÒ» | ÈÏÌÏÄÎÏÅ ÏÒÕÖÉÅ ïïï «úÌÁÔÇÒÁ×ÀÒÁ» esp. at the history note at the bottom. So it would be like: Zlatoustowskiy Instrumentalnyi Zavod? |

Constulted a collector friend from Moscow. According to him ZIK is Zavod Imeni Kalinina.
Zlatoust used Zlatoust, ZMZ, H&S, Bulat and other marks, but not ZIK. Alexei |

During WW2 short army knives model 1940 were manufactured not only in Zlatoust but in some other places. Also in the late 1941 – 1942 about 100,000 model 1927 shashkas (about 12,000 per month) were manufactured in city Ordzonikidze (Орджоникидзевский вагоноремонтный завод Наркомата путей сообщения) with manufacturer’s trade mark ORZ. In 1931 Zlatoust arms factory (Златоустовская оружейная фабрика) was given new name Zlatoust state plant (Златоустовский государственный завод) and manufacturer’s trade mark became ZGZ. In 1935 name was changed to Zlatoust instrument plant (Златоустовский инструментальный завод) and manufacturer’s trade mark became ZIZ. |

In the end of 1938 several Zlatoust’s plants were merged together and named Zlatoust instrument combine factory named after Lenin(Златоустовский инструментальный комбинат имени Ленина) with manufacturer’s trade mark ZIK. Latter that year official combine plant's name was changed to plant number 259 of People’s commissariat of Ammunition (Завод № 259 Наркомата боеприпасов) but manufacturer’s trade mark remained unchanged until 1944. In April 1944 edged weapons production along with metallurgy and few others were moved to new plant number 391 of People’s commissariat of Ammunition. Plant 391 received name Zlatoust instrument- metallurgy plant (Златоустовский инструментально-металлургический завод) with manufacturer’s trade mark IMZ. In 1946 both plants 259 and 391 were merged together and transferred to People's commissariat of agricultural machinery (Наркомат сельскохозяйственного машиностроения) and name and makers mark were restored back to ZIK. It’s remained the same until 1973 when it was changed to Bulat.
P.S. Art, in this day and age 50K picture limit it’s ridicules. Last edited by Art; 12-05-2007 at 06:16 AM. Reason: Then keep posting and earn the next level of image posting privileges. READ THE RULES. |
