Thanks Desantnik! That is very helpful and enlighting. ;)
My officer was transferred to that otdel on 22 June 1941 and stayed there until 1943... From the wording of the translation, I wrongly understood that being there, he was not involved in any fightings. But then, I read that he was wounded in the fighting for town of Beliy (near Rzhev) in 1942. Also he got several combat awards during that period. Also, in some citations, it says he was directly involved in the Patriotic War from the beginning... Now, it makes more sense. |

Read the discussion above with great interest because I often struggle with western military terminology. May I ask this: in more recent times, Soviet PVO included tactical missiles. Would it still be called 'air defence artillery' in the West?

Yes. Also, you can use "Air Defense" or "Air Defense Forces" since the former Soviet concept includes tactical intercept aircraft, in addition to cannons and missiles. Confused?

Hi Simon,
First set: Captain Baranov Liveriy Aleksandrovich, doc signed by Head of RO (dunno what that is) of General Staff Of Voiska Polskogo, Colonel Domoratskiy (other guys will correct my military terminology;) ) Second set: Shishlo Grigoriy Stepanovich, doc signed : Komandir 7 Bombardirovochnogo Aviatsionnogo Korpusa, gvardii General-Leitenant Aviatsii U. Uskakov, which probably translates as Commander of 7th Bombardment Aviation Corps (that came out clumsy  ) Guards General-Leutenant of Aviation U. Ushakov. Sergei |

OK, please guys, I beg you to translate this for me!!! I spent tedious hours trying to copy the characters into a word processor with character map to translate with babelfish, but all for naught! I accidentally deleted the file (permanently, my computer is set to override recycle bin) So, Please guys, anyone who can translate this, I beg you, I'm on my knees with my chin on the key board! Thanks! Its a manual for A Soviet mask microphone set. I got the gist of it, but its the minor details I need. Here are pages 1-8.

Put microphone in mask with letters, or blank side with the screws for wire attachment facing pilot? which way the plastic thing goes on on the mic connector on the helmet and mic cable which way the wire ends attach to the mic itself (positive negative leads on the mic cable, orientation on the mic wire attachment deelie) and what the metal plate with the hole deelie is for.. Although my All-in-one can scan the manual and interpret it as a document, its cyrillic scanning skills are less than sub par. I got about, say, 15% of the letters.. In a nutshell, I need all of section 4 translated. I think I am an idiot. I totally forgot that I can set my keyboard 2 type cyrillic instead of character map... less tedious and more efficient. let the retyping begin... But what language are the weird italicised letters on Part 3 (Technical specs.) on page 3 in? I cant seem to figure it out... 4. Anyone? all the translators are screwing up on me substitution the words I want with weird synonyms. OK, I get everything though, except- I know which way the catch (fixator) goes on on the amplifier end, but which way does it go on the "rosette" (the connector on the helmet) end? I cannot tell if there is a positive or a negative, one side says фж, the other says ла-5. Which side does the long end of the catch go on? There is a white dot on the 4 pin connector on the helmet on the 4:30 position, but all the dots are on the 12, 3, 6, and 9 o clock positions. The 3 o clock is the positive lead for the headphones, and the 9 is the negative lead. Since 4:30 is between 3 and 6, i would assume 6 is the positive for the mic (I can use a multimeter to trace the wire back to the two pin socket) So if anyone can confirm this, that would be great. it says to attach the amplifier pins to the mic using the screws, but which way does it go (orientation)? There is a black wire and a beige wire in the cable, and there is a 1 on one side of the terminals on the mic... Lastly. It says to use the stripper for application and removal... How? |
