Re: Makers marks, Numbers & Letters

That's what I thought at first. But why? Why leave one digit, and in such a weird spot? I can't imagine doing it to deceive, and if to hide the owner's identity why not erase the whole thing?
I see where the price sticker once was but I don't really see any evidence of the buffing-out of the other numbers. Not that the picture's that good...
The VoG's OK, right?

I can't explain why, but I believe that Marc is correct.

Re: Makers marks, Numbers & Letters

Couldn't it be as simple as someone started putting the serial number on but then stopped?

It was then issued in that state.

Simon,

IMHO, highly unlikely.

Re: Makers marks, Numbers & Letters

I have been having a flick through this thread with interest and would like to put forward a flimsy idea.

Could the symbols possibly be Quality checking Marks?

So rather than a specific makers mark, every worker had to have a random spot check on his quota and they were stamped with the "foremans" mark if they were up to scratch?

Sorry if this has already been mentioned or if it is a stupid idea.

I would very much like to learn more about these marks!

No, their use as trademarks from various Soviet factories is pretty well documented.
