Re: KGB and "Egg" Badges
Thank you guys, I would have kicked myself otherwise,
it sold on ebay at GBP £216 by a South African dealer and I thought that if it looks too good to be true it probably is. Pete |

Is this KGB badge authentic?
Hi,
I'm new here and I was wondering if the KGB badge I have is authentic or some knockoff. I have had it for about 10 years and it originally had a more copper plate finish to it, but over the years had been turning a greenish gold. The word ZUKOV is stamped on the back. The size of the badge is 3" x 1-1/2". Thank you for looking and any help. John |

Re: Is this KGB badge authentic?
John,
Original badges were manufactured in silver and exclusively by the State Mint (Monetniy Dvor). This is a fantasy badge. Marc |

Re: KGB and "Egg" Badges
I do have a question for the people who have been actually studying these badges longer than I have. Is there any reason why some people would prefer the later "Honored Worker" badges to the first variations? I know the rivets look better, but what about the age factor? I would think by the time the 1980s rolled around, they were handing these out with much more rapidity than before just because the size of the KGB and all its departments, divisions and directorates had grown to an extraordinary bureaucratic machine.
Thanks, P.

Re: KGB and "Egg" Badges
Phillip,
Actually, the KGB was a much smaller organization than its illustrious predecessor, the NKVD, which regrouped everything from State security to fire department to road repair teams. Marc |

Re: KGB and "Egg" Badges
Alexei,
I get that part. The MVD was/is the most enormous of the agencies. However, what I'm talking about is the spike in the rolls from 10s of thousands in the 1960s to well over half a million by the beginning of the 1980s and then (according to the last thing I read) over 300,000 in just the border guard alone by the mid 1980s. So let's say conservative estimates for people eligible for "Honored" status is 10 times what it was when the badge was first created. Logically, in the award-heavy 1980s there would have to have been many more of these produced and/or issued. So, back to my original question: why would "some" people prefer the later badges to the earlier one (say in the 1000-2000 zone)? And granted the one thing I can see is that the last variation had a shorter run with just the rivets - but for me, and I stress "me";), it comes down to preference...oh bother, I've just answered my own question.:o:chuckle P.

Re: KGB and "Egg" Badges
Many more people were alive in the 70's and 80's and remember "that" Soviet Union. The '30's and '40's to some are just as "memorable" as pharoahonic Egypt.

I found this one on the e site claiming to be a 10TH anniversary OGPU-NKVD "collar pin." As you will notice, there are four very new looking attaching posts at the rear. The key problem is the lack of wording or any symbols of the soviet era. Is this part of another medal or just total crap?
Thanks, P.
