Re: Research U shaped Bravery Medal
Cool research! So far it proves an "out of the box" random numbering theory.

Re: Research U shaped Bravery Medal
Many thanks Kirchgoens and many thanks to Excel !
Now we have 131 pieces, 105 with separate soldered ring and 26 with U-shaped ring. That makes a ratio 1 : 4,038 lowest s/n U-shaped ring: 2.864.684 highest s/n U-shaped ring: 3.657.124 difference: 792.440 forecast: 157.292 U-shaped ring 635.147 separate ring And it looks there are no serial number blocks of u-shaped medals. |

I've just examined the two BMs I posted above and the plot is getting thicker. Although they are so closely numbered, the usual soldered-ring 3.389.556 BM has a rounded "3", while on the "tongue" 3.389.803, the 3's are more angled, that is they have a flat, top-bar to the "3" and a downward slant at the free end of the top-bar.
The very first posting to this thread has the same type of numbering on both BMs. Note the close serial numbers and different style of "3"'s. |

With numbers that close, I'd think they were done in the same place. It might be as simple as the dude who did one of them had a different set of dies/stamps than the dude next to him doing the other one. The stamps are simply tools, and might be of mixed sets in a noisy and busy shop cranking stuff out during war. These are the little questions we'll never know the answer to unless some veteran of labor who worked in one of these shops does a memoir of his medal-making service. Somehow I don't think that book will ever be written. ;)
It also ought to completely dispel that rumor that still floats around the former Soviet Union that tongue versions came from that very short end-of-war land grab called the Victory Over Japan. ;) I still hear sellers try to pitch that story as they double the price of those tongues. I believe that we can just about safely say that these were probably made in batches that were generally mixed up with the others, and given out as catch-ups in those first few years after the war. We just need some citation research to nail it down more closely. |

For Bravery
Looks like the veteran scribed his name or the like on the back of this BM. Can someone translate the wording please.
thanks as always Brendan:)

Re: Named Bravery Medal
Brendan:
The bottom word Lopatino comes up on the internet as Lopatino, Belarus as well as Lopatino Volzhskiy raion, Smarasaya oblast. So maybe it is this location. I think there are two letters just above the word Lopatino. They appear to be N. V. I can only make out some of the letters in the word at the top. The beginning letters in this word are difficult for me to read. |

Re: Named Bravery Medal
Ah! I totally didn't see the N. V. (Could also be a B). :D
