I am pretty sure that the brown uniform the veteran is wearing is a M1969 uniform. The collars are slightly different on a M1958 uniform and are slightly tapred in appearance when compared to the M1969 uniform. Also, the cap is a m1969 service cap and quite a late issue judging by the vynl peak rather than the compressed cardboard peak of earlier models.
The addition of parade shoulderboards would be permitted as the veterans are not subject to strict military regulations (hence the medals being worn on the uniform). Perhaps the general is still a serving general as his uniform does confom to military regulations. In fact the general is wearing the medal for 100 yrs of Lenins birth and jubilee medal dated 1978 which I would hazard a guess meant that he was still serving during the 1980s when this photo was taken.

Many very odd things crop up in these veterans' parades. One of the main reasns for this is that the parade organizers - party or city officials or sometimes part-time members of the local voenkom (military committee) - could order the participants to change or upgrade things.
You might think that this would mean a bunch of officials carefully checking uniforms to make sure that everything matched regulations. But you would be wrong. That sort of thing did happen in proper military parades but what they really were concerned with in veterans parades was that everyone looked "nice". They would order the replacement of tattered ribbons or even shoulder boards. Replace an old hat with a new one, etc. Shawn |

2 Otlichnik badges?
Just been looking through my collection of photogrpahs and noticed this. This appears to be an NCO from a tank unit who has been awarded two Otlichnik badges. I was not aware that two could be issued to one person. Can anyone shed any light on this?

Here is a close up of the two, can't really make out what they are both for but I would imagine one is an excellent tankist badge.

My guess is that the one on the right is a mortarman. Can't quite make out the one on the left. Scout, maybe?

How would that tie in with his tank unit badges...could he have been part of an artillery unit attached to a tank unit?

There was a large cross-over in staff beween the armour and artillery branches for obvious reasons - the guns! If my memory serves me right the self-propelled gun crews were part of the armour branch but the guns were the same aas their artillery cousins. So it would be common for people to start as arty branch gunners and become armour branch gunners.

Photographs of Heroes needed
I am now trying to complete my second book on the Heroes. The first one came out in May of this year under the Osprey's title of HEROINES OF THE SOVIET UNION. I decided to go a companion piece on the men.
I have collected photos from private sources, ebay, Frunze Museum, the War Museum in Kiev, etc. Some of the photos are so so quality. It has always been a struggle to obtain nice clear photos. I had a bunch of original HSU photos which I passed on to a fellow collector because they were either high ranking officers or their biographies weren't so exciting. Does anyone have the following photos and could I borrow them for my book? FYODOR OHLOPKOV (Yakut sniper) MIKHAIL G. MALIK (Navy PT boat skipper against the Japanese) ALEXANDER MARINESKO (Top Soviet submarine ace) RICHARD SORGE (Soviet spy who warned Stalin of German's planned attack in June 1941). SULTAN AMET-KHAN (Fighter ace) GEORGI GUBKIN (Army, duelled a Luftwaffe ace in no man's land in January 1945 when his unit crossed into Germany! Gubkin approached the opponent and drew first. The HSU won!) Odds are, you probably don't have them! But I thought I'd ask! I could also use some interesting war photos with captions of the GPW. Paul McDaniel was very kind to provide some. I'm also looking for a beautiful photo of Rodina at Mamayev Hill...I have picture postcards, but I don't feel right about using them. To give you an idea as to the lengths I am going to obtain good photos, I am tracking down the family of the Yakut sniper in Yakutsk (Siberia)!! Thank you very much for any help or leads! |

Henry,
There is a photo of Sultan Amet-Khan in the book 'Stalins Falcons' by Tomas Polak published by Grub Street. If you have not already, you could approach th publishers and the author for a copy of the photo. I have attached a scan from the book to give you an idea what the picture is like. Hope this helps Mark |

Henry,
Kudos on the project. I have nothing of direct help. I have one original HSU photo which you are welcome to if you want. But it is rather beat up. It is to an air force colonel who commanded a fighter regiment. I have his basic history. I am sure you are aware that there is a Sorge postage stamp. Mine is not accessible but you should be able to find it easily. Shawn |
