Veteran Badge Classification Help
Hello All
I just received a couple of new badges and I'm not quite sure what or who they commemerate. Were they given out by the veteran committees of the units or are they generic anniversary badges? They have unit ID's but not the usual "ветеран" which I associate with WWII veteran badges. Any info would be much appreciated. Roscoe |

Re: Veteran Badge Classification Help
Left is for appropriately numbered fighter aviation regiment, right is for air defense unit.

Re: Veteran badges
I'll give you a helpful hint on the subject of these badges and their purposes.... Each of these badges explain what they are for on them, in Russian. If you go to Google Translate for example and type in phonetically if you know what the latin letters are, or using the electronic Russian keyboard they have to offer you can translate what the badges are for into a number of languages. Give it a try and then you can tell us (Anglophones) what they are celebrating.

Thanks for the advice. I usually use, Free Online Translation, and its virtual keyboard Translation Portal - Im Translator (components of Firefox). but many times, I can not decipher the letters well, :o so come out sentences without logic. Much better your translation. ;) Last edited by marsino; 07-12-2011 at 08:54 AM. |

Re: Veteran badges
That's a problem with computerised translations as to human ones, they totally lack all intelligence so they can't say "you spelt that wrong" or "put together it means something different". Google translate does have some automated "helpful" suggestions for what it thinks are spelling mistakes but sometimes it can be a hindrance as you haven't spelt anything wrong but it's telling you you have so you reconsider even though you were originally right. I've found online translations from Cyrillic languages into English more useful than not but when you start translating from Korea text it's a totally different game! Also online translations are all South Korean based. I don't think you will have a problem with those badges as the text is pretty clear (unlike some of the handwritten items) and hopefully you will be able to tell the forum all about them. It really is very helpful when a decoration tells you very clearly in any language just what it is.

Re: New veteran badges for my collection
Hello All
Just received what's turning out to be my monthly shipment of badges and thought I'd share some scans. 1. This is a badge for the 4th Mechanized Corp. Sorry about the quality of the scan but the tank portion of the badge is very thick . 2. Veteran fo the 51st Army. This is a badge I've been wanting for a long time and I'm very glad to finally have one. 3. Veteran of the 268th Rifle Division. |
