Re: Russian twins?
I agree with Marc on this one. I've got some background in comparing photos on the job, and would feel reasonably comfortable saying these two photos are probably of the same guy.
I also stand by what I said above that I tend to believe that from the late 50's on, photos in ORBL docs were more the exception than the norm. Tied in with the evidence of this OG Cavalier, my vote goes to the ORBL doc being doctored with a bogus and easily obtained photo. |

Re: Russian twins?
Yeh, but why in this case? A cleaner photo would've looked better

Two Ordenskaya Knizhka
These two just popped up on eBay. They're pretty sweet, if legit. At first I was a bit sceptical but after a bit of study I'm less pessimistic.
What say y'all? :) BTW, this is the sort of stuff I'm gravitating too after getting as many ODMs as I could afford. The paper items are as interesting, or even more so since they can tell a literal story, and they are reasonable plentiful and fairly cheap (although these two examples ain't). They don't have the "bling" effect that silver, gold plate and enamels do but I'm hooked. :)

Re: Two Ordenskaya Knizhka
The last two entries in the awards books are likely long service awards (Military merit medal / Red Star) and were added later.
looks okay to me. regards Andreas |

Re: Two Ordenskaya Knizhka
Hmmm... they both have pictures, both without stamps. Everything I've read says that 1945/46 books that had pictures (most do not), also have the pics stamped.
Pictures capture the imagination, and the one's on these two books are marvelous pics. Perhaps someone could look at them and see if the uniforms make sense. My history of trying to get books with pics is dismal - they're just very hard to find that look legit. The one I thought I'd snagged, with a group of good awards, with a good stamp and from a very reputable dealer, ended up upon research to be a very nice picture... of someone else. Obviously added to a good book after the fact to get someone like me to bite. (And well done; the guy in the pic is wearing the orders in the group!) Oh well... the group is still nice. At any rate just something to think about.

I should add to my initial statement about my optimism: I was refering only to the awards pages; I hadn't even compared the pictures pages. I see someone has bid on both already, I assume the same person. I also lost out on a bid for a nice DOSAAF ID just this afternoon. I hope the winner's a member here and will share. :D

Re: Two Ordenskaya Knizhka
If it was a literal instead of figurative minefield my board name would be "Stumpy" by now. :D Though not nearly as badly wounded as some, given what sells on auction sites.
Oh well, no risk, no reward. Even if the photos are bogus but the books are good there looks to be some seriously cool research potential.
