Dolf,
here are two Type 4 ORB´s which are counted as different Variations on the Monvor Website. You see the differences in appearance on the avers already. But the most obvious difference is the size of the maker mark.

Gerd,
Thank you very much buddy! :thumbsup The two you post are of the same variations of the two others I posted above? Maybe not I guess as the difference between the two I posted is not really on the size of the Mint mark (they seem to be of the same size) but rather on the size of the S/Ns and the way they seem to have been made! I'll have to check again the Mondvor site for more details. Anyway, I'm very glad for... well you know why ;) :thumbsup All the best, Dolf |

Well, ya now, people can be convicing sometimes ;)
As far as i understand it, they were made in Moscow and in Leningrad, so the slight differences. The one on the left with the bigger mint mark is the variation, you show on the top of this thread(both). Your right one has a higher S/N than mine, so they either switched back to the bigger mint mark or you can find both variations in the whole number-range, i am not sure yet. ORB Nr. 340.661 has a smal mintmark, Nr. 393.226 has a big one, 450.253 has the big one, they are mixed like it seems. I don´t know, maybe there´s a rule, but i haven´t found it yet. I can´t edit my post above, what i meant was Type 4 ORB´s were made in Moscow and in Leningrad. Both are Type 4 Variation 3, the 1st one (373XXX) is from the 1st batch of Variation 3 and your second one (423XXX) is from the second batch. this is what i understand from the Modvor-Website: There are 3 Variations Variation 1 produced in Moscow in 1951-52, issued in two batches 1st batch Lowest obs. Nr. 357.215, highest obs. Nr. 363.666 2nd batch (1952) lowest obs. Nr. 381.214, highest obs. Nr. 400.529 Variation 2 produced in Moscow in 1953-55, issued in two batches 1st batch lowest obs. Nr. 401.039, highest obs. Nr. 422.311 2nd batch (1954-55) lowest obs. Nr. 444.446, highest obs. Nr. 448.888 Variation 3 produced in Leningrad in 1954-57, issued in three batches 1st batch (Early 1954) lowest obs. Nr. 364.900, highest obs. Nr. 380.446 2nd batch (August-December 1954) lowest obs. Nr. 423.629, highest obs. Nr. 442.636 3rd batch (March 1955-September 1957) lowest obs. Nr. 450.253, highest obs. Nr. 564.955 Interesting thread. I have learned something new about the ORB. my first ORB (369XXX) is a Variation 3 produced in Leningrad and the second one (408XXX) is a Variation 2 produced in Moscow. Gerd

Gerd,
Thanks a lot, great job! :thumbsup This perfectly matches the info Rusty provided earlier. The only thing that changed is the higher S/N for the 1st batch of Var.3, 379504 on Rusty's reply and 380.446 on yours. I guess the reason is that since Rusty posted that reply a new higher S/N has been found! As Rusty says "MonDvor is a live work in progress, hence it will change on almost a monthly basis or as new information cames in." Thanks again both you guys, Dolf Last edited by Dolf; 01-08-2006 at 09:16 AM. |

Order of the Red Banner-which variation?
Hello everyone,
i would appreciate comments to this ORB Type 3. Which variation on the Mondvor Website is this in your opinion? T3V2S2 or S3? Lowest observed for S3 is 137.331 on Mondvor currently, so is this a new low with 136.023? Thanks in advance Gerd

I'm too lazy to look at the Mondvor site nuances, but if it helps with your determination, it is real and the serial number doesn't appear to be messed with.

Hello Gerd,
according to mondvor it is a typ 3 variant 2 subvariant 2 or a t3 v3. I am not totally sure but it seems to be a t3 v3. regards Andreas |

Hi Andreas,
i also had difficulties to find out the Subvariation. I agree, its most probably a T3V3(Mondvor). Thanks for your reply :thumbsup best, Gerd
