Hi William,
The very early screwbacks were made of brass however the later ribbon hung issues are made of plated white metal alloy, I know this because I have had the dubious distinction of having a 1st class with swords break at the ring in shipping and it is definately not brass as a local jeweller told me it could not be soldered to effect a repair because it was white metal. I found these images on eBay. The owner was kind enough to allow me to post them here.
I thought I'd post them since the images are so good that one can see all the nuances of this 5 (!) piece order.

Order of 9 September, 1944
I wasn't sure if this was supposed to go in Bulgaria or here but here goes. Sorry if I'm wrong...
I need help to see if this is an authentic Bulgarian Order. It's from a private seller and I would be glad to have it in my collection. He describes it as a: 3rd cl, Type 1 screw back, Military Division (with swords), 1940s If this is authentic what is a good price for such an order? I will also be attaching a photo of the maker. Thanks a lot guys! Michael |

Re: Order of 9 September, 1944
It's a real Type 1 Variation 2 3rd Class With Swords. As for price I have purchased one for $35 a year or two ago and $45 with case. I suppose if you can get one now for $60 you're not doing too bad. This type was issued in the 1950's mainly during the earlier part of the decade.
