Art,
It was on....ebay and described as a copy of Brezhnev fruit salad, which was obtained from a wax museum... Even if the story is just a fiction, the ribbons are in correct position and match pics of Leonid. Tal Last edited by Tal Inbar; 08-11-2002 at 07:55 AM. |

To come back to Art's question, if there was not one Gold Star really earned and not a birthday present. Does anyone know, when our great Leonid got his HSL? Maybe he got this award not at his birthday.
An other issue, which terrible interests me: Does anybody have a photograph showing Leonid with all his 5 stars: 4x HSU and 1x HSL. If you look at this attached picture, it is not possible to fix 5 Gold Stars in a row (only if Leonid would have had a body like King Kong personally, this would have been possible). So where did he put star No. 5? Maybe he transformed the HSL to something like as a bishops-ring and stick it to one of his fingers or somewhere else - who knows. Or maybe the Moscow Mint transfromed the HSL to an ear-ring (my former girl-friend always wanted to do so) for punk Leonid or attached the HSL to Leonid's original Zippo-lighter (good to impress ladies when giving them fire: "Oh, you are a real hero!"). What would be the market value of Brezhnev's orginal HSL-Zippo-Lighter? Special Zippo-Lighters might be very expensive and they are real collectors items, but Dr. Herfurth told me, that he never heard about such ****, so this might a singular item series..... What happend with the aircraft-carrier "Leonid Brezhnev"? Did the ship got an other name? There where only 2 persons with 2 Orders of the October Revolution: Our hero Leonid and the party-boss of the Ukrain, with this hard to spell name, somehow: Szerbizki. Regards from Vienna |

Old Leonid and King Kong share some features:
LEONID'S FUNERAL When the coffin was lifted to be placed on the catafalque for the lying-in-state on 12 November, the bottom collapsed and Brezhnev's body fell through the hole. Within a couple of hours, a new metal-plated coffin was produced as replacement. It was this change that caused the slip which millions of Soviet viewers watched in amazement. The two funeral attendants who had been selected to lower the coffin slowly into the grave suddenly found that the coffin was too heavy for them. One of them could not keep hold of his rope and the coffin dropped. It hit the ground with the sound of an explosion, at the very moment that the first gun salutes shook the air. Zhores A. Leonid was a very good looking young major-general. Also Stalin said once: "Who is this cute Moldavian guy" (of course Brezhnev was no Romanian from Moldavia, but at this time party-boss there).
By the way, because Tal quoted Zhores Medvedev. In an old magazine article from this historian about the career of Brezhnev, he writes that Brezhnev showed at the the Victory Parade by far not so much orders and medals as the other generals. This is a little bit a superfical approach, because Leonid was a polit-commissar and for them it was hardly possible to get nice awards. So if look at Leonid#s breast: 2 Red Banners and a Bogdan Khmelnitsky 2cl - that's quite extra-ordinary for a polit-worker in the Red Army. If you look at the magnificant work of Nikita Chruscev during Stalingrad and Kursk as a polit-commissar (he was a strange and queer politician afterwards), he should have deserved a Order of Victory. But he never got a real big award for military merits. So our friend Leonid knew also in the early stage of his career how to organize great awards, for falling one time into the water of the Black Sea. I think, Leonid's second Red Banner doesen't have a "2", I am right? You don't have a photograph which shows us the 5 gold stars? Regards from Vienna |

Great picture, Tal:
Not in his pocket, not on his ears or fingers, not on his Zippo-lighter, not on his ... just a second row of gold stars - that's a great solution. The second row always is the solution.... Regards from Vienna |

Yes, good find Tal!
I remember listening to Radio Moscow when Brezhnev died. They didn't say a thing about him being dead, they just played real somber music, with no talking..it was weird. Getting back earlier to what Christian was talking about, specifically if Brezhnev actually won any of those Gold Stars, I know he was involved in the Kiev battle, but I don't know if he was awarded then or much later. You had to have done some fair amount of damage to the enemy to receive a wartime HSU..these seem more like birthday presents. Art
