Soviet state seal patch - claimed to be for spacesuit. Opinions?
The Blue Patch was made for BURAN cosmonauts, however I found that one could find such a patch on a flight suit (for high altitude fighters such as Mig 25 and 31). The Braun (which I am not holding at the moment since I am in London and it is on the way from USA to Israel...) looks like it was made to several space garments - not only for spacesuit. I will check it out. Tal

If not original, very well made.

Patches made of "Lola" cloth?
The issue of materials flammability came up during work leading up to the Apollo-Soyuz mission ...
After considerable discussion, the Soviets agreed to use the American flammability test procedures to determine the safety of their equipment. One key point dealt with the cosmonauts' flight suits. Since the Americans could not let the Soviet crew enter Apollo wearing wool or cotton clothing, they volunteered to give the Soviets enough material to manufacture new suits. But Lavrov declined the offer, saying that the Soviets intended to develop a flameproof material of their own. After several experiments, Lavrov's team produced a cloth that Walt Guy noted was superior in its self-extinguishing characteristics to the material used by the Apollo crew. In a pure oxygen environment, the Soviet cloth, called Lola, would self-extinguish, whereas the American material tended to burn very slowly. My question is, did the Soviets continue using silk/cotton patches, or did they also start silkscreening patches on this material? |
