Further Info

Thanks for what you have told me so far.

1. The HSU that signed this document - what was his name? Is there a good source for info on him?

2. Is the date stated above correct? To me it looks like 5 ????? 1946.

3. What are the other names for the recipient (Saulkin)?

Its really exciting to know that this document was signed by such an important person.

Simon,

You are correct! I was looking in the wrong place.

The above date is the authorization date. The actual awarding took place on February 5, 1946.

Rusty.

Budapest

Hello,

I`d like to ask you a question concerning two of the medals of my personal collection, which I believe to be 100 % authentic pieces.

Both have some strange marks on the obverse and the reverse, which I cannot explain by myself, because they seem to be caused the same way somehow – maybe by using a special tool during the process of coining/ manufacturing… please take a look at the images – maybe you`ll have an idea !?

At first : Budapest - the next message contains the other medal (Vienna)

Thank you very much,

Jens***

Shocktrooper,

It could be a die break, or a piece of foreign material stuck on the die. I have never seen such a ring as on your Budapest medal

The ring has been bent somehow - maybe in battle, or during a downfall after having too much Vodka :o

Are there no other ideas, or maybe the perfect solution of that case ?

It is probable these two medals belonged to the same person. Although I don't like the look of the Vienna (the details looks "flat"), I can't tell conclusively from the photo.

Your "dings" most certainly weren't done at the mint. I've seen similar punches or scratches done on gold and silver portions of awards to test whether the metal was pure or plated - again not done at the mint, but by those interested in sellling/buying the awards. More likely, your punches are the work of idle hands - the recipient's, a curious child's, or some other vandal.

Hello,

the funny thing is that I`ve bought them seperately (Vienna in 1996 and Budapest in 1997); that`s the reason why I`m so confused. I think it`s almost impossible that they belonged to the same person.

Re: Medal "For The Capture Of Budapest".

Here is an example of the first variety.

I have no idea what is happening to the kolodka but I will see about giving it some treatment.
