Re: Archives Closed Again??
I guess it's all about what area(s) of history each individual is interested in. Each period - the early years when the revolution was still on everyone's mind and memory; the GPW years when there was both unity for a common cause and a homicidal lunatic running the country; the reconstruction and expansion; the Cold War/Afghanistan.
I have a certain amount of interest in each of these periods, but more interest in some than others. I suspect this is the case with most people. Frankly, as I get more into working on my website (shameless plug:D) and making connections from one stage of the evolution of the USSR to another, the more understanding I have of 1917-1991 as a whole. At the same time, I'll be the first to tell you that I run into more than the occasional student who at 19 has never heard of the Soviet Union and wouldn't recognize a Communist takeover if they waved red banners and held military parades on Bourbon Street.;) Phillip

Re: Archives Closed Again??
My wife said she felt very old after having dinner with our 22 year old and realizing he had no idea who Elizabeth Taylor was. But because he's my son of course he knows of the Soviet Union. :D

Phillip[/QUOTE] I was riding on a Mardi Gras float with Carrollton a few years back and a nice flask embossed with an OPW I (and containing some unauthorized beverage) disappeared into the framework somewhere. I've often wondered what some worker modifying the float for future years thought of that when they found it. |
