Hi William,
The very early screwbacks were made of brass however the later ribbon hung issues are made of plated white metal alloy, I know this because I have had the dubious distinction of having a 1st class with swords break at the ring in shipping and it is definately not brass as a local jeweller told me it could not be soldered to effect a repair because it was white metal.
