while there are some who claim that there is a staeadfast rule on brims, such as when the rounded brims came in and when the square ones went away. there really is no such rule though; yes, the square brims were more common though from 1940 through 1943, then the smaller rounded ones came more into fashion.

Just an interesting shot showing the service NKVD generals cap, and the parade NKVD generals cap,side by side.

The parade cap is an M1943, as parade caps with embroidery only came out in 1943. The service cap is not an M1943 as there was not really an M1943 service cap, the service cap was introduced in 1940 and is an M1940.
