I'm not sure of the age of the screwplate. The badge it belongs to is made of brass, not light alloy, which leads me to believe that it is older. The badge came out of Monglia, so perhaps it was made in a far-east factory that made seldom-seen screwplates? At any rate, it was fairly cheap and interesting, so I bought it. :)

I've got several such screwplates, all on Mongolian badges, so we can probably say it is a Mongolian factory screwplate. Now this does of course not mean that the badge and the screwplate come from the same factory.

Right. Thanks for the confirmation on the screwplate.

Barb,
Please, allow me to add my 5 kopeek regarding the general difference between 6-sided and 4-sided badges. The earlier were issued to graduates of Technikum which was roughly an equivalent of a technical school. The latter were given to graduates of higher learning establishments: institutes and universities. I don't think there is a difference between engineering and railroad badges. The symbol below the Soviet Insignia signifies a techinical field in general, not specifically rail-road or a certain engineering branch. Simon |
