Re: Medal "For Bravery".
I am not sure if this variety has been discussed here, it's one not in the red bible nor on the mondvor site--but it's widely acknowledged in Russian forums etc.
This one is what's called the "screwed in ring" variety. The ring of the medal is actually an eyelet with a rod that was inserted into the medal, and the whole thing was then soldered. It's a bit obscure and found mostly in the 2.4M range, though some have been seen as early as 1.92M and as late as 3.2M. Here's a nice example that still has the original ribbon cover as well! I have another one in the same range that I need to photograph. Cheers, Gerge |

Re: Medal "For Bravery".
Here's another "screwed in ear" variety in my herd. Technically speaking, it's not actually screwed in--the eyelet is inserted into the medal and then soldered. For me personally it's a real curiosity why the mint attempted this and in which locations.

Re: Medal "For Bravery".
For me, it's even more curious who had the attentive eye and time to notice this variant ;)

Re: Medal "For Bravery".
It's true, most folks on the Russian forums are of the same opinion. Not sure why, it's really resonated with me so I've been seeking this variety out.
Since we're on the subject of ears.. I need to post this double Bravery set in the Researched section soon. A bit different. |

Re: Medal "For Bravery".
Although I am definitely one for bringing attention to all the variation in the awards, for me the research is far more important - and varied! I tend to focus more numismatic attention to awards with no research possibilities.
I wonder if someone will compile a list of engraved serial numbers by engraver. It'd be nice to have that much time on hand. Most of my observations are made whilst shuffling things into the collection. If I went over with a magnifying glass or microscope some awards would have thousands of variations - then again it'd really frustrate the stamp collecting types. Obviously I had to look at the first Medal "For Bravery" at hand to check if it was this variation (one that has been posted in the research section) and guess what? It isn't, then again it is in the 2.2M and not 2.4M. It'll be a slow day before I go digging to check items archived away.

Re: Medal "For Bravery".
Yes there are definitely different number fonts used for serial numbered medals--always a curious thing. I love the minutia, might just write up the findings soon. :thumbsup

Re: Medal "For Bravery".
Issued to Akakij Ekvtimovich Tutberidze on 9th November 1966.
These later unnumbered documented Medals now sell for $25 and under due to the fact they are a little bit more difficult to research. As this recipient has a unique name I don't think I will have too much difficulty sending away for research on this likely wounds award.

A few minutes ago, I wasn't aware that variety wit the U-shaped ring, is "rarer" than more common types. To be honest, such things doesn't mean a lot to me, as it is the research that keeps me going.
Anyway, here is a "U-shaped" variety I found at a fair here in Denmark yesterday, at the reasonable price of $25. The number suggest a post-war award? Right? Best regards, Bjorn |
