I agree. I lived in Germany for 4 years and it is not illegal to import/export them. Dealers also freely mail them out.
The same cannot be said for Russia/Ukraine/most former Soviet republics except the Baltics. |

I have already been investigated several times at the air customs in Berlin, and never had any problem... As far as I know, there is no regulations against importing / exporting orders and medals (including the TR ones). As already said, many dealers buy and sell from Germany.

There should be no problems unless you try with German/Third Reich items. That said, try not to fly from Tegel as each time I have had major issues with medals. I don't know about you but I like to take the valuable ones with me as hand luggage..and they make an interesting x-ray target!!. More than once i've had to get them out and the police have made notes of serial numbers. I wonder if I can use there records for insurance reasons

I always fly from Tegel, as you always keep them in hand luggage, and even if they have asked to see them, I have never experimented the customs noting the SN...

To my knowledge there is no such laws concerning:
Latvia Estonia Lithuania I know that in Poland there is a law concerning items made before 1945 should not get out of the country unless you've got a permission. |

There is no problem buying soviet militaria in the Baltic states and taking it home. The challange is to find anything woth bringing home. Lots of fakes and high prices are bigger problems. But at least Estonia and Latvia are worth going to just for the trip. I've never been to Poland or Lithuania.

It is also illegal to cross the boarder (unless you have permission) with such items as: -gas masks -guns (even if it's a ground dug with blocked barrel, broken firing pin etc. You may expect up to 5 year-holiday in Poland) -anything else that customs officer may find in your bagage. Also some "educated" policemen consider wearing any military (or military-looking) clothes illegal, although only wearing modern polish uniforms of army, navy and police is forbidden. |
