It's a short article on the history and new meaning of the May 9th celebration. One thing I found odd was the author refers to WW2 as The Great Fatherland War and not the the GPW. I haven't heard to it called this before. Is this something new or is it just me?

I heard all sorts of translations of the GPW. Some of it had to do with the country of origin or the translator and some to do with simultaneous rather than edited or prepared translations, in my opinion at least.

I think "Fatherland" is the best English translation of "otechestvo" (otechestvennaya), so "Great Fatherland War" would be the best option, but "Great Patriotic War" sounds more natural and unartificial in English. But since there is quite a difference in meaning between "fatherland" and "patriotic", it seems odd that so many people prefer "patriotic".
