Re: Ribbon ID help?

Eric,

It is the ribbon for the Russian Federation medal "60 years of victory in WW2 1945-2005"

Re: Ribbon ID help?

Thanks Marc for the speedy reply.
But isn't that ribbon way out of place on this bar?
Or do ya think it's a totally made-up PoS?

There's no telling, but I would expect to see other jubilee ribbons in there. It's possible, but I'd lean toward POS.

Re: Ribbon ID help?

I don't know what to say about the order of ribbons since maybe it's off (???), but the backside looks genuine to me. I've now seen so many out-of-order sets (both ribbons and medals) on veterans and in bazaars that I have come to believe that some of it is put together, but a lot of it is the result of simple veterans not getting it right when they are 70 to 80 years old.

Some times I think these guys came from villages, went to war, and then went back to the villages, remaining essentially simple guys to the end of their lives. It is fairly common for a veteran to wear a medal with even the wrong ribbon.

I once bought a big bag of ribbon bars and multi-suspension racks that seemed odd until I looked closely. It turns out they were clearly all from one guy, and covered many, many years of his life as he added awards over time. Some were for full-wear, and some were abbreviated with just his best stuff. Some were out of order, some were not. It was funny to see.

Naturally. Just when I find a nice bar it turns into a turd.
The same guy has another I like. I'm a bit greedy to get 4 orders on top, especially an ORB....but this one is a bit dodgey when it comes to order of precedence as well.
sigh.....
BTW, Spasiba Pavel. :D

Re: Ribbon ID help?

Regardless of order of precedence, on the one right above this post, I think it's good. It really has that authentic look, and is not made of the easily faked cloth ribbons. I'd give it a thumbs-up.

Thanks Brian. You're being even more helpful than usual today. :)
I might take a flyer on both. Trouble is they would be sent from the UK and registered, insured airmial is evidently quite expensive from said green and pleasant land.

Shhh...I'm still looking for a worker's 40th (and a soldier's Lenin 100 as well). :)

Hey Eric,
If you're interested, I have a good deal for you with no downside. I've got a ton of ribbons including lots of RF (as you can see in the pic). I picked them up some time ago, just to get a few that I wanted (Nevsky ribbon for instance)

If you want a few, you're welcome to them. I'm leaving for Europe a week from Monday, but if you want to get in touch when I return, (Sept 3rd) You would be welcome to stop by, pick out eight or ten, if you need them, along with some shoulderboards, stars, etc.

Your price..$0.00

Steve

Brass vs. aluminum suspensions

Gentlemen,

I have been looking through the forum for a thread concerning the suspensions of orders and medals. I am wondering why some come with brass and others come with aluminum. Now I know that suspensions, ribbons, and the links connecting the medal to the suspension can all be changed at will by anybody. So my main concern is the origin of these suspensions, not whether or not a piece has its original suspension or not.

Anything? TIA

Re: Brass vs. aluminum suspensions

Bogdan,

For the most part it's an uncharted area. Obviously, an aluminum suspension would not be original to a WWII issue defense medal, but nobody had ever done a research on what type of suspension goes with what medal. An excellent (in my view) attempt at classifying them is here:
