Re: Fake Medals for Combat Service
Small number font indeed. Duplicate? But it doesn't match anything at the Mondvor site. I'd guess it's just an anomaly.

Re: Fake Medals for Combat Service
I don't like the number stamping, the ring atop the medal itself, or the reverse of the suspension. I strongly suspect a previously unnumbered piece with number stamps "value-added" at some point. The characteristics of the medal itself do not appear to match other examples in that serial number range. Someone please make a liar out of me. . .

Re: Fake Medals for Combat Service
I have seen this style of number before but as for where I can't remember but I'm sure someone will know.
Never-the-less this is a post-GPW piece.

Re: Fake Medals for Combat Service
Ricardo,
Welcome to our Forum. Unfortunately, you are starting your participation with a 50/50 score: the base medal is genuine, issued unnumbered in the 1950's~60's, but the small stamped digits were added later on in an attempt to make "a duplicate" out of an ordinary medal. I hope that you dod not pay any premium over the value of an unnumbered medals. Marc |

Re: Fake Medals for Combat Service
Fortunately I don't paid so much for this medal and I think the lessons I'm heaving here are very inestimable to avoid others mistakes in my future soviet medals purchases.
But only a question: What do you means as "a duplicate" medal, a forgery only to ad-value or a reposition medal for another with the same number? Thank You very much.:thumbsup Last edited by R.Ricardo; 03-16-2012 at 03:51 PM. |

Re: Fake Medals for Combat Service
Ricardo,
In some rare cases, a recipient could obtain a replacement for a lost/stolen/destroyed medal, but it was a very complicated process, so these are rather rare, and therefore more valuable than an original issue. HOWEVER, fakers have long noticed that collectors were willing to pay more for a purported duplicate, so they started producing some using the cheaper, later types of medals (unnumbered). Yours is, unfortunately, one of those. Marc |

Re: Fake Medals for Combat Service
Combat Service 344xxx range from my collection - need to learn about square hangers a bit more. Are the various parts of suspension correct?
Thanks, Sergei |
