Hero #1
I was browsing through my scans the other day and found these pictures we all have seen before. This is obviously a T2 medal on a late suspension. I have seen dozens of photos of Lapidevsky, including some later ones, and it would appear that he always had a T1 star. Any ideas?

Why would anyone do such a thing to a Hero Star(especially with that low SN)???!!!
This is bad. Very bad.

I am disgusted.:censored:hurl:cry: Why the hell would someone cut off the arms of an HSU like this? Hopefully a really good jeweler can fabricate the removed arms from the star and return it as close as possible to its original state.

an other way of seeing it
We are collectors and we love our things but this reflects the modern russian history in the early 90ties. Some poor guy had to cut the gold of a hero star to pay for food or living. It´s not disrespect it´s need. Maybe this was the last valueble thing that could be sold and in 1989-90 it was worth the gold value and nothing more. It´s easy to judge a person especially when we don´t have the story.

Alexei,
Could it be a case of a "copy of the original made for a museum", as was endemic in the former Soviet Union? Marc Alexei, It is so mutilated that identifying details are all but non-existent. I know this might be far-fetched, but could it be a novel way for fakers to distribute their wares? Marc |

It looks like spray pant. For some reason it does not look like gold.

Marc,
I suppose it's possible, it's hard to tell from this picture if it's a genuine medal or a replica. I am leaning towards genuine. Besides they could've easily made a T1 replica. In either case, the question still remains, where's the original #1? Alexei |

What's to say he didn't just change out the suspensions and the medal pictured is still #1?

There are other pictures of this piece floating around, and it looks genuine. Besides, I doubt a faker would use all this gold to make a piece that has no collectible value, they could just make a decent fake and sell it for more money. Alexei Quote:
That's true, I don't have the story, but I do believe that a person in need would've sold the entire medal, not just pieces. Unfortunately, to me this looks like a case of somebody needing gold for teeth caps. Alexei Desantnik, I suppose that's possible, but I have seen lots of pictures of him as an old man wearing his star, and it was always a T1. Alexei |

Lapidevski died in 1983 but it is easily imaginable that on this very date the museum did the suspension change? Durov book is from 1990.
