Re: Enlisted long-service badges
A very good question. And one that has puzzled me. The ribbon bar (bad image) shown below seems to show: Defence of Leningrad, Leningrad Jubilee, Army 30, Army 40, Service 3rd Class. Nasty photo, curved plastic ribbon bar (which is not with the group). None of the other document photos show ribbons. And, of course, he wears them badly out of ofter (but as a very proud Leningrad resident - his mother also got the defence medal). Sadly, only the documents for Defence of Leningrad and the long service medal are present with the group.

Re: Enlisted long-service badges
If you have the document for long service you should be able to work out roughly when they joined the forces. This person may not have been in the forces (or at least for not long enough) to be awarded the Victory Over Germany Medal. I have seen a few bars of wartime students of Leningrad who later became soldiers who have the Defence Of Leningrad Medal but no VOG as they were civilians whilst defending the city.

CtahhR, plausible and interesting! As he have the 1948 anniversary medal, he should have been in the AF by then. As the long service awards were established in 1957, it could be that he joined in 1947 or 1948.

Re: Enlisted long-service badges
As I struggle with this group, I was wondering some things like this. His father (a veteran of the Great War and Revolution -- many documents and photos -- died before WWII). His mother also got the Defense of Leningrad medal. I still need to try to work out family dynamics and dates. His long service document:

Re: Enlisted long-service badges
Maybe I should just put up the whole family group?

Re: Enlisted long-service badges
Sounds like a good idea! The date on the document fits in with a post GPW sign-up.

Re: Enlisted long-service badges
Shall do so, but it may require fetching home to scan (from their off-site living arrangment) the material. (And I have to admit that I feel somewhat guilty doing this, as this is one of those groups I am thinking about "moving along". This will not be an "advert"!)
