Christian,
Actually, there were few Marshals of the USSR without Hero of SU title. The last Marshal Yazov did not have one, as well as Shaposhnikov, Golikov, Bulganin - had HSU though. Early Marshals who were executed in 1936-1938 also did not have the HSU title - Blucher, Tuchechevskiy and Yegorov. |

Too early, too political/administrative and too late
Tal, New World,
that's what I mentioned: The ordinary "Marshall of the CCCP" got at least one HSU. The middle group got the shoulder boards for so called political merits or adminstrative. Yazov was too late, but at least he got a Nevsky in WW II. Kulikov for example got his HSU under Breznev. Regards from Vienna |

Chrisitian,
Marshal CCCP Yazov didn't have the order of Nevsky. The awards he got from WW2 are: Medal for combat servise; Medal for defense of Leningrad; Medal for victory over Germany. Maybe his Red star (which he got on 15.6.1945) was for WW2. Tal

Sorry
Tal,
sorry, I mixed up the fruitsalads of some marshalls. The Red Star should be for WW II. So Yazov's servicerecord as an young troop officer in WW II is not so bad: Red Star & Combat Service - for long service, he was too young at this time. Regards from Vienna |

Tell me about him
Art:
Why Stalin used a"less rank" (from colonel and lower ranks) collar tabs on his uniforms if he was a Generalissimus? And can you send me more bigger pics of Stalin to print´em and put it on my notebooks? I already did it before, but my fascist partners at school bothered me more than once with this...¡But I don´t care! ¡GLORY TO COMRADE STALIN! Esteban

The photos of the prototype Generalissimus uniform is from a uniform on display in the Military Uniforms Museum in Moscow. It is almost impossible to visit the museum as it is a closed military museum only for special guests. Through some connections I was able to visit it in August of 2002. This uniform was there, as well as a grey Generalisimus uniform that had differnt prototype boards. These boards were typical marshals boards but with an extra wreath around the soviet state seal.
The pic is great, as we were not allowed ANY photos inside the museum. Did get a free little guide book. DougD |
