Re: Laureate Of The Stalin Prize.

According to Alexei Rybin (Stalin's Bodyguard) the prize money that came with the award came directly from Stalin and not the state.

Re: Laureate Of The Stalin Prize.

I visited Sachsenhausen concentration camp near Berlin and part of that is also a building with an exhibit on Sachsenhausen after WW2 when it became a camp run by the Soviets to detain nazis or other unwanted individuals.

In this exhibition i stumbled on a stalin prize awarded to a german with a rather interesting story. Bruno Golecki was removed from the camp in November 1947 along with other "specialists" and relocated to the soviet union.

In 1953 he was awarded a stalin prize for his efforts leading a group of 100 german specialists/engineers in developing a rocket navigation system for the soviet air defense. Presumably some of his former colleagues from the nazi time were working in the US for NASA, whereas he landed on the other side. Surprising that one could go from being a "bad guy" to winning a staling prize within 10 years.

Stalin Prize.

Ts is the Stalin Prize Medal 1st Class awarded in 1948 to J.I. Nikoladze of Georgia for a 1947 sculpture of Lenin. The artist died in 1951, Stalin in 1953. Therefore, this medal did not get exchanged for the State Prize and is one of the few that have survived.

Backside of Stalin Prize medal. No serial number but award date.

How much money was this prize meant? I remember reading somewere that Lenin prize was 25,000 Rubles. What can you tell?

Hand signed by Stalin. For the reach only...It is from very well known seller:

The certificate has 8 pages showing embossed Soviet state emblem of pre-1948 type - with 11 republics in the Soviet Union. Stalin's portrait is featured on the fourth page, opposite the text page listing each of the 12 recipients of that year's Stalin Prize, 3rd cl. for this particular achievement.

Citation from the Sovnarkom (Council of People's Commissars) is followed by the printed line saying that this particular diploma was issued to Pavel Fyodorov. Same page (page 6) has signatures of Joseph Stalin, the Chairman of Sovnarkom, and Chadaev, Chief Supervisor for the Affairs of Sovnarkom. Stalin's autograph is very clear, in the middle of the page, to the right of the Sovnarkom stamp.

Issued to a scientist for developing new technology that allowed to reduce expenditure of non-ferrous metals in weapon production. The award came at critical time when much of European part of the Soviet Union was still under German occupation and the output of Soviet metallurgy was much reduced compared to pre-war years. Nineteen forty three was probably the last year when Stalin hand-signed Stalin Prize documents - all the later ones that we had seen had his rubber-stamped facsimile signature.

Stalin Prize 1953

Manfred Baron von Ardenne (1907 - 1997) Stalin Prize 1953

Manfred Baron von Ardenne (German) got the Stalin Prize in 1953 and he got 100.000 Rubel with the award.
He got the prize for his work related to the soviet atomic bomb.

He has a quite interesting curriculum vitae:
link to a museum: http://www.dhm.de/lemo/html/biografien/ArdenneManfred/

With 15 years he got his first patent. He invented a multiple electronic tube, which was the basis element for a new radio.

With 18 years he starts to study physics, mathematic and chemistry. But after 2 years he abort the study, because he thought the study is to unflexible and outdated. So he makes self-instruction.

In 1930 he ionvented the "Flying Spot Scanner" which leads to the first fully electronic working television picture tube.

During the war he worked for the german atomic programm.

After the war till 1950 he worked for the soviets in Suchumi in Georgia. He invented a few things in relation to the soviet atomic programm. For that he got 1953 the Stalin Prize.

In 1954 with the 100.000 Roubles he founded the only private research institute in the German Democratic Republik. Till 1990 he lead the institue with 512 workers. He got over 600 patents.

Tal,

I saw it, looked good to me.

He was a Chief (engineer?) for construction of a mine in Donbass. The last picture is too small and I can't quite make out what exactly it was awarded for.

And a Stalin 3, from 1950, to a fellow who had worked in ichthyological research and in early 1930s was the director of the Pacific Institute of the Fishing Industry.

My understanding is that 1950 was the first year when Stalin Prize 3rd cl. started being awarded for science -- only 2nd and 1st classes had been awarded to scientists prior to that.
